Mastermind is reportedly inspired by the true story of Paul Le Roux, a programmer and crime boss who became a DEA informant. The primary source material will be a series of investigative reports published by Atavist Magazine co-founder and CEO Evan Ratliff. Le Roux built encryption software in the 1990s, and in the early 2000s, he moved on to selling prescription drugs over the internet. From there he made the weirdly cinematic choice to branch out into Iranian arms deals, strange agricultural aspirations in Zimbabwe, some level of involvement in the Somali drug trade, and ordering assassinations (which he is currently in prison for).
