NO RECORDS BROKEN: 'Iron Man 2' Opens To $55M Friday For Estimated $135M Weekend; $193M Global Cume Already
FRIDAY 9:45 PM UPDATE: It's doubtful that Iron Man 2 will break any Hollywood records during what's estimated to be its 3-day $125M-$135M opening weekend. But sources tell me tonight that Paramount on Friday debuted the Marvel film in 4,380 North American theaters to probably $55M, including $7.5 million in Thursday midnight shows at just under 3,000 locations. The original pic launched with $98.6M from 4,105 locations. But the sequel reeled in the widest release in Hollywood history. Kicking off the official summer movie season, IM2 already has earned $193 million domestic and overseas. Five more big territories show the film today, plus the U.S. and Canada. Online seller MovieTickets.com said IM2 ws accounting for 90% of all its pre-sales, with 842 sellouts. That means plenty of tickets are still available for purchase.
