James Gunn Will Direct 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'. James Gunn calls directing 'Guardians of the Galaxy' a two-edged sword, as its success will keep him from directing other movies.

It sounds like Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be a big hit, if the early reviews are any indication. It's being called Marvel's latest masterpiece, and one of the studio's best movies yet. Marvel president and producer Kevin Feige already confirmed that there are too many stories in the comic books not to do Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Now James Gunn has comfirmed that he will return to direct the sequel, if it proves to be a big hit.

Speaking with Adam Carolla, James Gunn confirmed that he is set to return, but called the opportunity a double-edged sword because it won't allow him to take on some of the other projects he's recently been offered.

" "I'm actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, then I'm gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I've already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don't do the sequel, so it's a weird situation."

What do you think? Would you rather see James Gunn return to the world of horror? Or is he the only man for Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Marvel announced 5 new release dates yesterday, and this sequel is surely one of them.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 comes to theaters in 2017.

Vamos a ello». Estaba cantado, ¿no?

No me pude resistir.

James Gunn:

"There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill's father is between a select two or three of us," says Gunn. "That's been part of the plan since the beginning, that's something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu's place in everything made sense and it does, so it's all very specific stuff."

Importantly, Gunn had a major revelation for fans trying to work out who Peter Quill's father might be. "It's definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I'll say that much."

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Will Introduce More Female Characters
Director James Gunn promises that the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel will include new female characters, but Captain Marvel isn't one of them.

Director James Gunn attended Dragon Con over the weekend, where he continued to promote his Marvel sci-fi adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, now the biggest movie of 2014. The subject of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 arose, specifically whether or not the character of Captain Marvel will be showing up. She won't, Gunn says, but the sequel will be used to introduce a number of new female characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy isn't without it's own strong female leads, with dueling sisters Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), as well as Glenn Close as Nova Prime. But there are a number of other female characters that have been introduced in the Marvel comics that could be making their way to the big screen in 2016.

Marvel Studios has come under fire in recent months for its lack of female driven superhero movies. Black Widow is the most prominent of the current stable, though Scarlett Johansson has yet to get her own stand-alone adventure. Elizabeth Olsen is being introduced as Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But the landscape is far from crowded. James Gunn hopes to rectify that when Star-Lord returns with his crew, which currently features only one female member.

Collider, who was at Dragon Con for the convention, reports:

"The plan, according to Gunn, is to introduce new female characters into the world of Guardians as soon as he could."

Of the many female characters present in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book, any number of them could appear. The favorites include Mantis, a green-skinned telepath and former barmaid, Angela, an angel bounty hunter that appeared in both the Spawn and Avengers comics, Nikki, a super human genetically engineered to withstand immense heat and live on the planet Mercury, and Moondragon, a bald martial arts master and telepath. It will be interesting to see how some of these characters are brought to the screen, as it's doubtful Marvel and Disney will want two green-skinned woman as main characters or two telepaths competing against each other.

One female character that won't be showing up in the sequel is Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. James Gunn does confirm that the character will be showing up soon, but not in his movie. It has been rumored for quite some time that Captain Marvel will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The most recent report claims she will have a cameo at the end of the movie as Captain America assembles a whole new team of Avengers. Its also been said in recent weeks that Captain Marvel maybe scrapped from the upcoming summer 2015 release, and held for a later date.

James Gunn went onto reveal that he had a different cameo planned for Stan Lee in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. He wanted the Marvel comics icon to appear as part of the The Collector's Museum. He would have appeared alongside a Chituari soldier, Dark Elf, Adam Warlock's cocoon, Cosmo and Howard the Duck. Groot discovers Stan the Man in one of the cages, only to be flipped off by the creator of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film already has Star-Lord giving the finger, Disney wouldn't sign off on this cameo. Instead, we get to see Stan Lee as a playboy hitting on some very colorful alien women.

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Director Teases New Team Members
Director James Gunn teases new characters in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2', while shooting down any possibility of a 'Star Wars' crossover.

A week before Guardians of the Galaxy opened in theaters, en route to becoming the biggest movie of 2014 so far with over $372 million, writer-director James Gunn signed on to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The filmmaker teased new details about the sequel, including the possibility of new characters, during Variety's Entertainment and Technology Summit, where he joked about how the sequel will open.

"It's going to be a really surprising open. What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes. In really horribly brutal fashion."

While there isn't a direct quote from James Gunn, the director does tease "fans may see the team adding members."

The writer-director confirmed that all five of the main characters, played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, will be back, along with a number of unspecified characters from the first movie and a few new characters as well.

The filmmaker then hinted that the movie will uncover a few secrets that were presented in the first. While he wouldn't go into detail about which secrets will be revealed, it seems likely that fans will learn more about the identity of Peter Quill's real father.

Here's what he had to say when asked about his writing process for the sequel.

"I spent all day on Aug. 1, the day the first movie was released, writing Guardians. I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story."

He was also asked about the possibility of this Marvel franchise crossing over with another Disney-owned property, Star Wars, since they both take place in galaxies far, far away. Here's what James Gunn had to say about the Guardians of the Galaxy meeting up with Star Wars characters.

"Star Wars was a long time ago. It would have to be time travel."

Fans will be able to pick up this Phase Three adventure on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD December 9, which will included a director's commentary and a number of deleted scenes. The director teased one of these extra scenes is a longer version of the "fake laugh" Rocket Raccoon lets out after Peter Quill reveals how much of a "plan" he has.

"In the long version of the scene where Rocket is laughing at Quill, Quill gets very offended by that and takes a vote of the other Guardians to see who thinks that the laugh is fake. It's a pretty fake laugh, and I think Rocket gets hurt that Groot goes against him."

The filmmaker also talked about his passion for making the movie in 3D, which is something he pushed for from the beginning. He revealed that his shots and special effects were planned out in advance for 3D in pre-production, instead of just converting all of the footage to 3D in post-production. He also said that the international appeal of 3D is what drives most studios to push for it.

"3D kind of is a wash in the United States, but in Europe it's bigger. So it makes much more of a difference than it does here. If it was just 3D in the United States, most people would not do 3D."

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Director Teases Returning Characters
'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn wants to bring back Yondu and Nebula, but The Collector may have a lesser role in the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on December 9th, which means director James Gunn is once again making the press rounds, and this time he's dropping subtle hints and tidbits about his next most anticipated project, the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2. In a recent interview with EW, Gunn teased a few characters that he'd like to see return to the screen when his follow-up hits theaters summer 2017. He also hinted that this will be more of a 'family drama' than it will be a traditional sequel.

Aside from the core team, whom the director teased earlier in the year will be expanding with at least one new female addition, James also wants to bring back a few familiar faces:

"Yondu and Kraglin, the Ravagers. And I love Nebula. I think that she is underutilized in the film. I want to see more of her. The Collector."

While Benicio Del Toro is expected to have an expanded role in Marvel Phase Three, his screen time in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 may be limited.

"He'll reappear. I don't know if he's gonna be in the next one. I do think his story is really compelling, and I think he's one of those very interesting shades of gray characters."

In terms of setting out to write a sequel that is different, yet contains itself in this world that has already been established, James Gunn states:

"I would say the main thing is: Don't just copy yourself, which is what a lot of sequels do. And in some cases it works. Like James Bond movies. But James Bond is a different type of character. This is many characters. I think Guardians, at the end, is not the structure of a comic book movie, it's not the structure of an action-adventure, it's not the structure of a comedy. It's the structure of a family drama. So how does that play itself out?"

What do you guys think so far? Are you excited about the possibilities that reside within this impending Marvel sequel? Or are you more excited for Captain Marvel and Inhumans?

Nebula Returns in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'; Will Groot?
Director James Gunn teases that Baby Groot may be Groot's son, and Ronan won't be back in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'.

Writer-director James Gunn is currently working on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but the filmmaker recently took a break from his busy schedule to host a Q&A session on his Facebook page last week, where he teased new details regarding this highly-anticipated sequel. Be warned, though, if you have not seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, there will be SPOILERS throughout the story, so read on at your own risk.

At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, the tree-like creature Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) appeared to have died, only to "come back" in the form of a growing "Baby Groot," whose dancing scene shown over the end credits remains one of the most popular scenes in the film. James Gunn revealed that Groot may still be dead, hinting that "Baby Groot" may be Groot's son. Here's what he had to say below.

"Well, who says baby Groot is Groot and not Groot's son. He might be dead."

The filmmaker also added that Karen Gillan will be back as Nebula, although Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) will not return for the sequel, although he did leave the door open to return in future movies. Here's what he had to say about Nebula coming back:

"Sometimes people are confused what happens to Nebula. She looks down for something to fall on, allows herself to fall on a Ravager craft, and takes out the Goth Ravager inside and flies away, leaving everyone to deal with this s*** themselves, because she's stopped caring. She will be back."

He also talked about the possible inclusion of Lylla, who is listed as one of Rocket's associates during the prison scene. In the comic books, Lylla, a talking otter, is Rocket's girlfriend, but revealed that he isn't sure this character will appear in the sequel.

"You'll have to wait and see on Lylla. But I will say I think a raccoon being sexually attracted to an otter is similar to a human being sexually attracted to a possum. I think it's very important that Rocket is the only thing like him, which is the source of his sadness and loneliness. An otter girlfriend could get really cartoony really."

One of James Gunn's regular collaborators is Nathan Fillion, who had a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy as a massive prison inmate at Kyln. James Gunn added that he'd love to find a way to bring Nathan Fillion back in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

"I would love to put Nathan in GotG2 if it could work out. He's one of my very good friends and we love working together."

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Story Too Risky for Marvel?
James Gunn reveals that Marvel thought his ideas for 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' were risky, but the script is being turned in soon.

Writer-director James Gunn recently took a break from working on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to appear on the Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend podcast, where the filmmaker revealed new details about the highly-anticipated sequel. The filmmaker already confirmed in August that Star-Lord's father, whose identity was left a mystery in Guardians of the Galaxy, will not be the same as the comic books, where J'Son was Peter Quill's dad. During this new interview, James Gunn revealed that the sequel will feature an original story he came up with, that is much different from the comic books and was described as "risky" by Marvel executives.

"It's not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that. We'll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we're going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole. It's different than what's in the comic books. Peter Quill's father is somebody different in the comics. So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I'm like, 'Okay, here's what I think the sequel should be.' And they were like, 'Oh, whoa. That's risky, but okay.' Now I'm going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we'll find out how well it works."

Of course, the first Guardians of the Galaxy was seen as a "risky" move by almost everyone except Marvel, until it became a huge hit at the box office last summer. However, given the fact that Marvel thinks this sequel is risky, it must really be out there. Aside from the Guardians themselves (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper), no other cast members have been confirmed, but we have previously reported that Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Yondu (Michael Rooker) will likely be back. What do you think about these plot details? Let us know what you think, as we continue to count down the days until Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
