Abrams says that closing things out is a very tricky act and as a director he couldn’t take anything for granted:“What’s amazing about the story and the script is that you learn that both the Sith and the Jedi have been playing a very long game. From the get-go, there’s been this chess match. All these pieces have been played. And now we get to see who gets checkmate.”
Ridley meanwhile spoke with Marie Claire about what was easily the hardest part of the seven-month long film shoot – the climactic one-on-one, rain-soaked lightsaber battle between her and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. Taking six days to film, water cannons blasted at them in the midst of chilly November U.K. weather. Ridley relied on daily banana and peanut butter sandwiches and the fact that the lightsabers weighed less this time: “If they had been heavier, I don’t think we would have been able to do it. It’s just really epic’.” She then goes on to say this was the best film shoot of her career:“The ending of this trilogy of trilogies is a tricky thing. This movie has to work on its own. It’s got to have its own beginning, middle and end. It can’t make the mistake of a lot of sequels, where you just assume a character is beloved, where the movie suffers because the character is suddenly lacking. We can’t assume anyone cares.”
“It’s a big film for everyone. I did all of the emotions: I did frowns, I did smiles, it was the sort of biggest breadth, and I think that’s also why I had such a good time, because I got to do so much shit — like, physically, emotionally — and I got to work with so many people.”
