In this age of the instant franchise, it makes since that 20th Century Fox would want more than one new Alien movie from director Neill Blomkamp. And now, in a new interview with Empire magazine, he is hinting at just that. While he doesn't come right out and say that he is planning a two-part adventure, or even a trilogy, he does tease the possibility of 'more' than one movie. He explains:
"I'd come up with an idea, and when I met Sigourney on the set of Chappie,I presumed that she would never want to play Ripley again. Rightly or wrongly, I had that in my head. I also didn't know where you could go with her, given 'Alien 3 and 4′. So when I started speaking to her, I just wanted to know more about the process of making the first two films. The first two are the ones that I care about. Then I started to realize there was a whole film - at least a film, if not more - that still contained Ripley, which I was really surprised by."
If 20th Century Fox is to follow the current trend in big franchises, its likely that Alien 5 will be stretched into a new trilogy, whether or not that serves the story well. Neill Blomkamp went onto talk about his inspiration in building this new adventure for Ripley:
"I had a bunch of different ideas for different films. My favorite, on a gut instinct, artistic level, was Alien, by a long way. But I had this inhibiting mental roadblock about wanting to work on my own stuff, and not being held accountable, whether it's by a studio or by fans, or whoever, I just wanted to be left alone to do my stuff. That's kind of a big deal for me. I knew that my artistic compass kept driving me to Alien. Whenever I wasn't needed on Chappie, I spent time on Alien, to the point where I hired my own concept artist and fleshed the entire movie out, basically. I saw Sigourney again, and her enthusiasm in it, and me still not knowing what I was doing... Well, the thing that actually made it really clear was that we have xenomorphs all over the house [including drinking glasses depicting graphic scenes from the films]. No bullshit, that actually is what made me realize that there's a massive portion of my brain that's taken up by the world of the xenomorph. And I'm like, 'Hmm. Valid point.'"
What do you think? Should Neill Blomkamp just give us one last kick-ass ride for Ripley? Or should he stretch this into two or more movies? We've seen what can happen when an idea is stretched into 3 ivies, just look at what happened to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While they are wondrous technical achievements, many fans will tell you they suffer from bloat, and that's never a good thing.
Anyone worried Alien 5 might take Prometheus 2 off course shouldn't be. The upcoming Xenomorph thriller from Neill Blomkamp will actually help tell the story of Prometheus 2 in the long run, as the director promises not to 'step on' Ridley Scott's toes. It also helps that Scott is producing both entries in the long running sci-fi horror franchise. Neill Blomkamp recently chatted with Empire, where he discussed how welcoming Ridley Scott was to the whole project. He also revealed more about the impending title reveal, and that he has changed his Alien so that it will fall in line with what is being planned for Prometheus 2:
"I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping 'Prometheus' a little bit. One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make."
Neill Blomkamp has made it clear that his film will be a follow-up to Alien and Aliens, but he promises he is not wiping Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection off the map. He already has a title for his sequel, and it won't be Alien 5. He plans to reveal the title soon, but says that it gives the whole movie away.
"I sent what I wanted as the title to Ridley. It's kinda quite bold, and he was like, 'I really like that.' So I'm gonna test it, I don't think it's gonna work, though. I have my own idea but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn't work, I'm dead in the water..."
Terri Tatchell, who is not only a frequent collaborator with Neill Blomkamp but also happens to be his wife, revealed why her husband is taking on the project. In fact, she encouraged him to finally take the plunge and make the movie a reality. She explains:
"He's hemming and hawing, going back-and-forth. Finally I said, 'Look, look at what you make me drink my orange juice out of every morning,' and I pulled out of the cupboard, we have these set of glasses that have these brutal scenes from the movies. I said, 'You make your daughter drink out of these cups! This is a sign.'"
Neill Blomkamp continues:
"No bullsh*t, that made me realize there is a massive portion of my brain taken up by the xenomorph,. I was like, 'Hmm, that's a valid point.'"
While it hasn't been officially confirmed by 20th Century Fox, it is believed that Ridley Scott will return to direct Prometheus 2 with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender returning to star. In previous interviews, the director has stated that the sequel will feature a return to the homeworld of the sinister Engineers of both the alien species and humanity. The movie is currently scheduled for release on March 4, 2016, though it isn't known when filming will begin. If that date is to stay in place, it should be soon. Alien 5 is eyeing a 2017 release, with Aliens stars Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn expected to return as Ripley and Hicks. Fox has not yet given the sequel a confirmed release date. But it sounds like Ridley Scott and Neill Blomkamp will be working together to make their movies tie into each other.
