Director Jon M. Chu Reveals New Masters of the Universe Details

It's been quite some time since we've heard anything about director Jon M. Chu's Masters of the Universe, and it seems that project might be put on the back burner, in favor of G.I. Joe 3. We reported last month that the filmmaker signed on to direct the sequel, which Paramount wants to put on the fast track, leaving the status of Masters of the Universe in question. Here's what the director had to say about both projects, discussing the early designs they have completed for Masters of the Universe and much more.

"I think that what helps us is knowing what we do in Joe and knowing that Masters has to be very different and has to feel very different, but the script for Masters of the Universe is what really hooked me. I love Masters of the Universe, but I didn't know necessarily how to make it into a movie until I read the script and thought, 'Oh my gosh, I totally see it. I get how this is going to shake it up, I get how this is different from any other thing,' and it got me really really excited. We're still working on that one and Joe has momentum right now. The audience has been great and they want another one, so we're rushing to get that done and Dwayne (Johnson) has a certain time period so it may end up that Joe goes first in all those things and I don't know if Masters of the Universe will wait for me or where that's going to end up. But right now it's been great. We've been designing a ton of stuff for Masters of the Universe as a really beautiful, grounded, honest world - that's the best way I can describe it. It's everything you want Masters of the Universe to be in terms of the fantasy but not in a way theatrical crazy way. It is actually a gorgeous world that we're doing in the initial visual concepts that we've been making."


The director wouldn't exactly confirm that Dwayne Johnson has signed on to return as Roadblock, but it seems they are moving forward with the hope that he will return to lead the G.I. Joes on another mission.

"I can't confirm or deny the reports. But yeah we're continuing and of course the Rock is our leader and much of what he displays is what G.I. Joe and what the future G.I. Joe will be, but we're trying to figure all that stuff out right now."


We'll have to wait and see what this means for Masters of the Universe, which was written by Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2), Michael Finch and Alex Litvak (Predators).

Espero que no pongan a The Rock de He-man.... El único personaje negro de la serie(bueno, él es mitad samoano mitad negro) era Capturator creo, yo tenía el muñeco pero no llegué a verlo en los dibujos.

Masters of the Universe Loses Director Jon M. Chu

Jon M. Chu is no longer attached to direct Universal's Masters of the Universe adaptation, although the project has gained a new screenwriter with Terry Rossio (The Lone Ranger) signing on.

No reason was given for the director's departure, but he had been attached to the languishing project since July 2012. The filmmaker signed on to direct G.I. Joe 3 back in June, and we also reported in August that the filmmaker was being sought to direct another Paramount sequel, Star Trek 3.

Prior to Terry Rossio's involvement, the Masters of the Universe script was worked on by Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) and the writing team of Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (Predators).

Little is known about the story, which was previously called Greyskull, except that it will be set on He-Man's home planet of Eternia, which He-Man defends from Skeletor. The original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series from the 1980s was set on Eternia, but the 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as the evil Skeletor, was set on Earth. Of course, now that a new writer is on board, this all may change.

Terry Rossio is best known for co-writing the Pirates of The Caribbean movies, including the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. His other credits include National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Deja Vu and Shrek.

Parecía que Jon M. Chu, director de 'G.I. Joe: La venganza' iba a hacerse cargo de la película de Columbia Pictures, pero el cineasta terminó desechando el proyecto, por lo que el estudio se puso en la búsqueda de un nuevo director. Según The Wrap, la lista de candidatos para dirigir el film la componen Mike Cahill ('Another Earth'), Jeff Wadlow ('Kick-Ass 2'), Harald Zwart ('The Karate Kid') y Chris McKay, editor y supervisor de animación del éxito, 'The LEGO Movie'.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal y Steve Tisch, de Sony y Escape Artists desarrollarán esta película basada en la línea de juguetes de Mattel creada en 1982 y que ha contado con varias series animadas y una película de acción real en 1987. Terry Rossio, quien recientemente trabajó con Gore Verbinski en 'The Lone Ranger', se encargará de reescribir el guión.

Esta adaptación a la gran pantalla será una versión llena de fantasía donde reimaginarían a un Príncipe Adam como un soldado que anda en busca de su destino, en un acontecimiento sobre el mágico mundo de Eternia. Aquí, el malévolo Skeletor cuenta con un ejército de alto nivel tecnológico y con él intenta cambiar las cosas y erradicar la magia. Jeff Wadlow reescribirá (y está a puntito de dirigir) ‘Masters del Universo’. Y después, a sumarse a la ola de mutantes de la Fox.

Jeff Wadlow (Kick Ass 2) ha sido fichado por Sony para reescribir la última versión del libreto de Masters del Universo, según informa The Wrap, ratificando en cierto modo una información aparecida en Schmoes Know este mismo jueves, en el que se apuntaba el nombre de Wadlow como director del film.

Si bien The Wrap no confirma este último aspecto, resulta harto improbable que Wadlow se dedique simplemente a la confección del guión, máxime cuando el proyecto está cogiendo fuelle y la designación oficial del realizador está a punto de caer, de acuerdo con la información de Jeff Sneider.

Hay que recordar que Wadlow tiene pendiente la adaptación de X-Force, la adaptacion del comic Marvel para 20th Centuty Fox, cuyo guión ya ha sido terminado y adquirido por la productora con vistas a un estreno no más tarde de 2018 para proseguir con uno de sus grandes pilares económicos: la franquicia mutante de X-Men –en principio, X-Force seguirá a X-Men: Apocalypse. Tampoco cabe olvidar que Fox tiene en cartera Deadpool, Cable y, muy posiblemente, un film de Gámbito (más rumores sobre otro de Mística, con Jennifer Lawrence).

Nueva ‘Masters del Universo’ en marcha
El director y guionista Jeff Waldow ha estado trabajando en un nuevo guión.

Habiéndose convertido Hollywood en franquicialandia no es de extrañar ver que está en marcha una posible nueva adaptación de Masters del Universo, la franquicia de juguetes de Mattel, que ya tuvo dos series de televisión animadas y una película en 1987 protagonizada por Dolph Ludgren con mullet y Frank Langella con plastilina. Por muy entrañable que resulte el rollo del cine ochentero, hay que reconocer que Masters del Universo no fue precisamente una adaptación de la que sentirse orgullosos. Eso de ver a un musculazos en gayumbos siderales persiguiendo una especie de sintetizador techno de un universo paralelo, parecía más el guión de una noche de farlopa de Pocholo que de una película de ciencia ficción y aventuras.

La noticia llega a raíz del siguiente tuit del productor Devon Franklin:

Ya informamos en Abril de la seria posibilidad de que Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) escribiera y dirigiera una nueva adaptación y, como puede verse, el trabajo de Wadlow parte de los borradores previos de Alex Litvak, Mik Finch, Richard Wenk y Terry Rossio para Columbia Pictures (Sony, para los amigos), de la que Franklin es vicepresidente senior de desarrollo.

'Masters of the Universe' Movie Logo Revealed
Columbia Pictures has unveiled the first look at 'Masters of the Universe' as pre-production begins to heat up.

It's been awhile since we last heard anything about Columbia Pictures' planned reboot of the Masters of the Universe franchise, which is getting a new live action movie following the original 1987 release based on the classic 80s cartoon series. Today, DeVon Franklin, senior vice president of Columbia and the driving force behind this new iteration of the fantasy adventure series, unveiled the official title card and logo for the impending release. He also teases that more news is coming soon.

Way back in early January, just as the New Year was kicking off, DeVon Franklin revealed that Jeff Wadlow had completed a fresh draft of the screenplay. No director has been announced yet, but its speculated that this news may be revealed before the end of the week. Jon M. Chu was at one time supposed to direct, but left the project to take on another action figure toy line and cartoon series adaptation with Hasbro's Jem and the Holograms.

It's possible that Jeff Wadlow, who directed last year's sequel Kick-Ass 2, will step in as the director. He is also set to direct an X-Force movie for 20th Century Fox. Another name that has been mentioned in terms of directing is Mike Cahill, who last directed I Origins. Does this first look image get you excited? DeVon Franklin, Vicepresidente de Columbia Pictures, parece el más interesado en que “Masters del Universo” salga adelante. Hace no mucho compartió con todos el guion ya finalizado con la firma de Jeff Wadlow, y ahora hace lo propio a través de Twitter con esta pieza de arte conceptual de Battle Cat, el corcel de He-Man. Buena pinta tiene, desde luego. Seguiremos atentos.

Tras su trabajo en el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel con 'Thor: El mundo oscuro' y su futura secuela, 'Thor. Ragnarok', el guionista Christopher Yost prepara su viaje a Eternia. Según Variety, Yost ultimará el guión de la interminable película de Columbia Pictures, 'Masters of the Universe', proyecto que lleva años en desarrollo.
