No lo sé. Según me escupe San Google, los tres Reyes Magos originalmente eran blancos hasta el s. XVI.

De todas formas, desconozco el ambiente político-cultural de 1959, pero conozco el actual, y es de sobra conocido el origen de este énfasis falsamente revolucionario (cuando no podría venir más cobijado por el sistema), en reescribir las historias al gusto de minorías que no son tales. Os haríais un favor dejando de negar la realidad por no parecer fachas.
 
Baltasar nunca tuvo una descripción física concreta, Helena de Troya sí está ligada a un contexto histórico y cultural muy específico, los reyes magos ni siquiera tenían nombre en la biblia, si mal no recuerdo. Los nombres Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar aparecieron después en tradiciones medievales y la idea de que Baltasar fuera negrito era simplemente como una forma de representar simbólicamente los tres continentes conocidos desde Europa, Asia y África.

Y en las representaciones medievales y renacentistas de Baltasar evidentemente usaban actores europeos maquillados porque era teatro y no buscaban realismo étnico sino simbolismo religioso. Ben Hur es bastante tradicional en eso.
 
Buffffff me parecen dos elecciones de casting muy desafortunadas. Las he visto poco a Lupita y a Elliott, pero me parecen ambos buenos actrices/actores, bien capaces de trasladar emociones y personajes a la pantalla.

La imagen de Lupita choca con la imagen clásica del personaje que la mayoría tenemos en nuestro imaginario. Cuando la imagen de un personaje está tan cristalizada en el imaginario colectivo como en este caso, en el que es un icono de un tipo de belleza, el romperla es un riesgo cuando menos. Riesgo de perder espectadores, de que el ruido distorsione u opaque la historia que se cuenta, en fin.

He leído gente que defiende la elección de casting argumentando que Matt Damon y otros actores que aparecen no dan el arquetipo de griego. La verdad es que los aqueos se establecieron en lo que es la zona de Grecia unos 700 a 1000 años antes de la época de la Guerra de Troya provenientes de la zona de los Balcanes, el Danubio y el norte del mar Negro. Los estudios de ADN antiguo, junto con representaciones en frescos y descripciones de pueblos limítrofes (egipcios, pueblos del Levante) marcan un fenotipo general de piel clara a aceitunada "tipo mediterraneo", cabello rizado castaño u oscuro y ojos avellana, coexistiendo con personas con cabellos más claros (rubios, pelirrojos), y con ojos claros. Las descripciones de autores griegos muestran apreciación por los rasgos claros de piel, ojos y pelo, que se asociaban frecuentemente a la clase aristocrática. Ejemplos claros en cuanto a la Odisea son Menelao, Aquiles y Helena, a los que se describe con los términos xanthé y leukos, que son dorado en términos genéricos y blanco (referido a los brazos de Helena). Así que el Odiseo/Matt Damon sí está en el canon, mucho más quela Helena/Lupita.

Está claro que es absurdo valorar a un actor o actriz por su color de piel, pero entiendo que no es este el punto de fricción aquí. Es que al adaptar una obra cumbre de la literatura de un alcance y hondura ENORMES que entre otras muchísimas cosas muestra un fresco de la sociedad de la época en el que se incluyen las elecciones y gustos estéticos de la época, muchas muchas personas esperan un intento de reconstrucción "realista" o "fiel al texto" de ese fresco, de ese entorno. Porque lo entienden como lo más sencillo y básico de adaptar. Y luego, a partir de ahí, intentar trasladar todas las capas de profundidad de la obra.

Pero si ya no se hace así de inicio muchas personas ya valorarán en menos la obra y desconfiarán.

Me gustaría saber el motivo del director. Si simplemente pensó que era la más capacitada para el papel, a nivel actoral, si no valoró esa fidelidad "de marco", si, como dicen otros, es por cuotas, o qué. Me llamaría menos la atención si el casting global fuera más diverso, pero en los trailers no se ve nadie de color en la tripulación de Odiseo, o entre los pretendientes.

El que intérprete también a su hermana Clitemnestra, que en la Odisea no tiene la hondura que tendrá posteriormente en el ciclo de tragedias, eso sí me parece una idea creativa muy interesante.

Y Elliott Page como Aquiles me parece absurdo, salvo que haga del Aquiles de 10 años de edad. Como Telémaco sí sería perfecto. No tiene pase ninguno. Por mucho que sea un Aquiles/sombra el que aparece...

But alas! Let my misanthropy not ruin your perfectly acceptable afternoon. Humanity sucks, but we all know that WE are the exception. We are the special ones. The chosen ones. (Mostly by ourselves).

Let me assure you thus, with the utmost confidence, that despite so many members here barking at each other about the sex of angels (aka, the skin color of Helen of Troy and other matters) with the same kind of arguments, almost verbatim, that are being used all over the web, pro and against it (which does suggest a rather worrying lack of originality and ability to think for themselves), Elon Musk will not, I repeat, NOT use his SpaceX rockets to send all the members of this forum to Mars in the vain hope of them losing their virginity to the incomparable Dejah Thoris (yes, I am a proud nerd)... as much as some of us might wish he did. With some of them, at least.

Creo que hay algún oriental, árabe/levantino o hindú entre la tripulación de Odiseo ... pero vamos, es lo que dices. Si estas decisiones de casting fuesen por algún rollo de inclusividad forzada, como se repite machaconamente, los papeles principales estarían más repartidos entre diversos actores étnicos. Tratándose de Nolan, y viendo cómo ha ido desarrollando su filmografía, simplemente creo que es su manera de hacerlo todo 'distinto' a lo ya visto, o eso se cree él.

Correcto. La tradición del rey negro es posterior. No he leído la novela, pero en la película si hay un rey negro.

Volviendo al tema de La Odisea yo veo mucho peor lo de Severus negro que este caso, aunque ya digo que no es que me parezca bien lo de Lupita.
Si esto es decisión artística o programario woke, pues no sé.
 
De todas maneras, lo que ha apuntado el forero @thundered mantis quizá se ajuste más a lo que podría aportar Page, con su aspecto frágil y asexuado, como Aquiles en el episodio del Hades, que es donde aparece: una versión triste y patética de lo que una vez fue. Aunque claro, también podrían haber tirado de un actor esmirriado tipo Christian Bale en El Maquinista, pero supongo que ningún actor con cierto porte querría molestarse en torturar su cuerpo para lo que sería prácticamente un cameo.
