Universal Pictures has been developing an
Untitled Mummy Reboot for quite some time, and back in
July, the studio confirmed that this project will be the first in a sprawling, inter-connected franchise that will bring back new versions of the studio's classic monsters, such as
Frankenstein,
Dracula and many more. An end credit sequence in this month's
Dracula Untold helped
set up this monster-centric universe, but the
Untitled Mummy Reboot will launch the franchise in 2016.
Today,
Superhero Movies News reportedly got their hands on the new script for this
Mummy Reboot, and have revealed the reboot's spoiler-free opening scene, set in modern day, which you can check out below.
"The story follows Navy Seal Tyler Colt and his mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker. To him and his teams surprise the terrorists within the bunker turn out be nothing more then some grave robbers who have all magically died. Upon entering the bunker Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control. They soon realize the bunker they have infiltrated is actually a centuries old tomb. Mayhem erupts as all the Navy seal members start turning on one another and are captivated by the forces within the tomb. Tyler is the only one to make it all the way deep within the tomb alive to find an Black Iron Sarcophagus. It's marked with Egyptian symbols like the Ankh and Eye of Horus. Here Tyler is entranced by the forces to open up and release what is inside. But after placing his hand onto the sarcophagus he is immediately stabbed in the palm with a star shaped symbol. From then on his mind is cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria.....The Mummy."
The site also reports that the script includes other characters such as archaeologist Jenny Halsley, mysterious billionaire Lorenzo Montanari and Malik, the leader of a group known as the Temple Brothers. These details tie into the
end credits scene in
Dracula Untold, where
Luke Evans' title character is seen in a modern-day market.
Of course, it hasn't been confirmed if these details are accurate or not, and it isn't known if these details come from the most recent version of the script, or an earlier draft.
Alex Kurtzman signed on to
direct back in July, from a script that was originally written by
Jon Spaihts, with
Alex Kurtzman and
Roberto Orci providing revisions.
Alex Kurtzman and
Chris Morgan (
Fast & Furious 7) are overseeing this monster franchise for Universal, which will also likely include
The Invisible Man,
The Wolf Man and
Van Helsing, although no other titles have been officially confirmed.
