Universum ha anunciado el lanzamiento en Alemania de Apocalypse Now Redux en Blu-ray Disc para el próximo 29 de enero de 2010.

La versión extendida vendrá en el formato recortado a 2.00:1, como viene siendo tradicional en Storaro, lo cual ya no resulta ninguna sorpresa. Encima se permite el lujo de incluir una nueva declaración al respecto :mosqueo, porque evidentemente la excusa que dio la otra vez ya no vale para la alta definición. :diablillo

Creo que es algo así:

"Ejem, pues yo inventé esto del univisium hace diez años como nuevo formato de cine para que lo adoptase la industria pero nadie me hizo ni puñetero caso y todos siguieron rodando en 1.85:1 y 2.35:1. Pero como soy más terco que las mulas yo sigo rodando en 2:1 y recorto todo a ese formato. ¿A que os gustó el Blu-ray de El último emperador? Pues eso es lo que hay. In fact, the transfer of Apocalypse Now Redux (from film elements to High Definition digital videotape) was made with an aspect ratio of 2.0:1. This is consistent with the 1998 transfer of the original film Apocalypse Now done for DVD.

The aspect ratio 2.0:1 was chosen by the cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro, who supervised every aspect of this film transfer. Storaro believes that for the purpose of TV transfer, it is better to crop (slightly) the extreme left/right edges of the originally photographed frame and allow for a taller picture on both conventional and 16:9 TV monitors, because the video presentation will have more vertical resolution and detail and will be more impactful.

An orthodox 2.35:1 or 2.4:1 transfer would in some ways be a more accurate reflection of the framing seen in most cinemas, but the picture would be using only approximately 50% of the available scanning lines of the NTSC and PAL systems and hence have very limited vertical resolution. Storaro believes that since he himself composed these shots when the film was made and since he carefully made fine adjustments to the framing as needed in the transfer, the 2.0:1 transfer is the best possible compromise in adapting the very wide film picture to the very "square" TV.

Mr Coppola and I agree with Storaro's views and accepted his decision.

You are right to wonder about the discrepancy between the theatrical trailer and the feature itself. But the feature is not 1.85:1, it is 2.0:1. The transfer of the trailer was not supervised by Storaro, and was done using the conventional theatrical aspect of 2.35:1. It doesn't bother us, as this is considered a DVD "extra."

Lo que está en negrita es muy discutible si hablamos de SD, pero una vez entramos en la alta definición pierde definitivamente todo el sentido.

Lo que está en rojo es directamente falso.

Estoy ansioso por ver que nuevas mentiras nos cuenta esta vez.

PD: Y terminar diciendo que "no molesta" que el tráiler sí respete el formato original porque simplemente es un mero extra ya es de traca. :lol

Lo de Storaro siempre me ha sonado a "soy un artista reputado y mi trabajo es para las salas de cine, nunca para formato doméstico: si las quieran ver en casa, serán castigados". Y cuanto más tiempo pasa y más se depura la técnica, más falsos suenan sus argumentos y más me reafirmo en mi impresión.

Lo patético es que productores y directores como Coppola y Bertolucci le sigan el juego y transijan con la mutilación de las películas.

Por supuesto, si no fuera así ni me habría planteado abrir el hilo, sin embargo no debes albergar esperanzas de encontrar en el BD algo distinto a lo anunciado aquí.

Tanto el máster como los derechos de distribución son propiedad de American Zoetrope y los licencia en cada país a una distribuidora local para que ésta comercialice la edición que ellos han creado para que la adapten al idioma de cada país y la distribuyan. Es decir, que salvo por la lógica localización idiomática, todas las ediciones que vayan apareciendo (y lo irán haciendo en breve una vez anunciada ésta primera) serán idénticas en contenidos, con la excepción de posibles complementos exclusivos externos al Blu-ray Disc que pudieran acompañarla.

Pero en cualquier caso, como dice Grubert, nos podremos quedar satisfechos poniéndola a parir.

En Hometheaterforum han puesto un enlace a una entrevista que hicieron a Storaro para Filmmaker Magazine en junio de 2007. Así que es bastante reciente:

Storaro: Now, there's this rumor they're going to retransfer Apocalypse Now at 1:2.35 -- I will not do it. I will not do it. Because on a television it doesn't work.

Filmmaker: Not even if it's being played on an HD 16:9 screen?

Storaro: 16:9 should be changed.

Filmmaker: There would still be black bars, but it would be less...

Storaro: No, no. We should change the screen and make it 18:9.

Filmmaker: 2:1.

Storaro: You can never be perfect. It could never work in television at 1:2.35. 2:1 is the perfect balance. Even if you lose something, you gain the most important things.

Es como ese chiste... En una autopista, difunden por radio un mensaje: "Atención, por favor, tengan cuidado porque en la autopista hay un loco que se ha metido en sentido contrario." Y uno que lo está oyendo dice: "¿uno? ¡Hay cientos!" ;)

Ah, y en la entrevista también defiende que se deje de hacer cine a 24 imágenes por segundo y a partir de ahora se ruede todo a 25fps. :doh

In "unofficial" release news today, here's something VERY cool for you Coppola fans. We've been hearing rumors about this for a while now from our industry sources, and some of you may be aware that director Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope recently licensed a number of their catalog titles to Lionsgate. In fact, Lionsgate just a couple months ago released their own DVD version of Apocalypse Now: Redux. Well... we can confirm that the studio IS currently working on an ultimate Blu-ray release of Apocalypse Now. And from what we've heard, they are absolutely doing it right and including everything you'd want from an ultimate release of the film. (Note that a pre-order listing for just such a release appeared very briefly on Amazon.ca about a week ago, but was quickly pulled. It indicated the set would include BOTH cuts of the film AND the Hearts of Darkness documentary in the same package.) It's still a little early and nothing has been officially announced yet by the studio, so consider this info Rumor Mill worthy for the time being. But hopefully we'll be able to report more when we get back from the Con. Love that smell of napalm in the morning!

Una pregunta que tengo... ¿Apocalypse Now es una película digamos... "independiente"? ¿No ha estado nunca ningún gran estudio detrás de ella?

La produjo Coppola independientemente a través de su compañía (Zoetrope), jugándose su patrimonio personal, que estuvo a punto de perder cuando el presupuesto final cuadruplicó el inicialmente previsto. Hay que tener en cuenta que en aquélla época Coppola era DIOS, ya que venía de rodar "El Padrino", "La Conversación" y "El Padrino II", por lo que todo lo que tocaba se convertía oro para crítica y taquilla. Por supuesto, como su compañía era pequeña, Coppola firmó acuerdos de futura distribución con las majors del momento, de forma que por ejemplo en EEUU, la película fue distribuida por United Artists, que se quedaba con la exclusiva a cambio de la aportación directa de fondos para el rodaje. De esta forma, aunque contaba con el apoyo de algunos estudios y distribuidores importantes, que le aseguraban parte del presupuesto y una adecuada difusión, produciéndola él mismo a través de su compañía se garantizaba así mismo un control total sobre todos los procesos. De ninguna otra forma le hubieran dejado que el rodaje en Filipinas se eternizase y se escapase de control, o que se pasara dos años en la sala de montaje hallando la película entre los cientos de horas de tomas positivas. Y a pesar de ello, tuvo serios problemas personales/financieros/legales porque durante más de una ocasión pareció que la producción iba a venirse abajo y que la película nunca llegaría a completarse o estrenarse.

Si, algo de eso recuerdo, del estudio que creo junto a George Lucas que tan bien funcionó en los setenta y tan parado se ha quedado ultimamente produciendo las "cosas de casa".

Ya no se producen las películas así, la verdad es que en el caso de Apocalypse Now es curioso, y probablemente de otra manera no nos habría llegado la obra maestra que es.
