Baz Luhrmann has entered negotiations to direct an untitled biopic on Elvis Presley for Warner Bros.
Screenwriter Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) is penning the screenplay, which isn't based on any pre-existing material. It isn't known what periods of the rock and roll icon's life will be covered in this project. The director has been in negotiations for several weeks, and his deal is expected to be finalized. It is also believed that the filmmaker's wife, Oscar-winning production designer Catherine Martin (The Great Gatsby) will join the project as well.
Gail Berman is producing through her Tecumseh Productions company, while Whalerock Industries' Andrew Mittman is attached to executive produce. Courtenay Valenti is overseeing the project for Warner Bros.
The director has several projects brewing at the moment, including an adaptation of the TV series Kung Fu, which he entered into negotiations for earlier this month, along with a Napoleon mini-series for HBO, which Steven Spielberg is developing based on a 1961 unproduced screenplay written by the late Stanley Kubrick.
Baz Luhrmann made his directing debut with 1992's Strictly Ballroom, before moving onto the 1996 William Shakespeare adaptation Romeo + Juliet and the 2001 Oscar-nominated musical Moulin Rouge. He also directed the 2008 drama Australia and last year's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic The Great Gatsby.
