Falleció Kim Manners, una de las almas de esta serie:
'Supernatural' loses its 'patriarch'
Fans of the CW's "Supernatural" have a reason to mourn tonight. The show lost one of its executive producers, Kim Manners, to a battle with cancer on Sunday.
Warner Bros. Television, which makes "Supernatural," released the following statement Monday evening:
“Supernatural” executive producer and director Kim Manners passed away last night in Los Angeles, following a battle with cancer. Below please find a statement from “Supernatural” creator & executive producer Eric Kripke:
"Everyone at 'Supernatural' is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to 'Supernatural,' and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him."
I had the pleasure of meeting Manners several times in the '90s when I worked for magazines that frequently covered "The X-Files." That show, which had a fraction of the budget of many networks shows, was frequently lauded for its distinctive visual style. It's no coincidence that the "X-Files'" former director of photography, John Bartley, is now one of the the DPs for ABC's "Lost."
Manners is one of a small handful of directors who defined "The X-Files" oft-copied visual palette. And he inevitably brought a sense of suspense to his episodes; he often directed the first or second part of the many complicated two-parters the show undertook in its early seasons. I've often said that those episodes were far, far better than either "X-Files" movie.
I've come late to "Supernatural's" hardcore fandom -- Season 4 is by far my favorite so far. But over the years I've noticed that the show has always had more than its share of visual panache. Manners was certainly a big part of that. He directed the wonderful "Lazarus Rising," the Season 4 premiere, which helped draw me into the show's highly entertaining fourth season. His last episode was Season 4's enjoyably creepy "Metamorphosis" (it wasn't "Family Remains," as some sites have been reporting; that was directed by Phil Sgriccia).
Manners was a welcoming, irreverent presence those few times I had the good fortune to spend time on his sets. I remember one photo shoot on "The X-Files" set during which Bartley and Manners kept us all in stitches the whole time.
"Supernatural's"
Jim Beaver said on his
site that he's "in mourning for one of the best friends and best directors he's ever known." Former "X-Files" writer Frank Spotnitz wrote
this about Manners' passing:
"Kim had a blazing intensity that inspired everyone -- writers, producers, actors and crew. 'Kick it in the [expletive]!' he'd say to us. And 'I love you,' really meaning it. As long as he'd been a director, he never lost his passion for his work.... Kim was an incredible force of life. It is hard for me to believe or accept that he is gone."
I send Manners' family, friends and co-workers my sincere condolences.
