ONKYO - What is Dolby ATMOS? - YouTubeOnkyo and Denon break cover with Dolby Atmos AV Receivers
Onkyo has become the first manufacturer to announce products carrying Dolby Atmos support.
But the news is even better than that, Onkyo has also confirmed that a firmware update for some of their existing products will enable Atmos compatibility, too.
We must stress that we’re getting this news through unconventional channels at the moment. A promotional video on Onkyo’s YouTube channel and a solitary news site is all we have but it certainly looks legitimate. Unsurprisingly, the YouTube video has now been pulled but you can see screenshots above and below and we've found a way to host the video, see the end of this story.
The new models with Atmos, in the US at least, are the TX-NR1030, TX-NR3030 network AV receivers, and the PR-SC5530 Network AV Controller, that are set to release, stateside, in August 2014. Naturally, all models will include height channels with the TX-NR1030 supporting up to 9.2 channels while both the TX-NR3030 and PR-SC5530 support up to 11.2 channels of audio.
Other new products which will feature Dolby Atmos include the HT-S7700 and HT-S9700THX all-in-one systems, and the SKS-HT693 and SKH-410 speaker packages.
It is reported that the existing models to get Atmos updates are the TX-NR636, TX-NR737, and TX-NR838 but we’ll confirm when we know for sure.
And what would you know, just as we were receiving the Onkyo news, not to be outdone, Denon has now broken cover with their own Atmos product announcements.
The Denon AVR-X4100W and AVR-X5200W which are expected to be available in September will deliver Dolby Atmos multi-dimensional sound and will be the first Denon AVRs to feature Dolby Atmos.
All Dolby Atmos compatible Denon receivers will have the processing power to run a more enveloping, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibrated 9 channel Dolby Atmos layout using 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 configurations utilizing ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 5.1.4 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 4 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 7.1.2 configuration is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with 2 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
Well, it’s happening, even if this all does smack of a rush PR job but we’ll fill in any concrete UK details once we get them.
