Mr. del Toro elaborates in much greater detail than ever before (at least on the record) why he was attracted to ‘The Hobbit’ in the first place and explains his vision for how his two films will transition into the Jackson’s trilogy. He says, “we are creating a beautiful overture”. Can you guess what the two scenes he hopes to film he called,”two of the greatest experiences of my life”? The audio is less edited and more telling than anything we have heard so far.

Mmmm... pues nada, a esperar esos días. A priori me han gustado las palabras de Del Toro. Respeta mucho la obra de Jackson y aunque quiere hacerla a su manera se aproximará bastante a la trilogía.

In a major step forward on “The Hobbit,” Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the New Line-MGM tentpole and its sequel.

The widely expected announcement came Thursday afternoon jointly from exec producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, New Line president Toby Emmerich and Mary Parent, the newly named chief of MGM’s Worldwide Motion Picture Group.

Del Toro’s moving to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and WETA production teams. He’ll direct the two films back to back, with the sequel which will deal with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

New Line is overseeing development and will manage production. Both pics are being co-produced and co-financed by New Line Cinema and MGM, with Warner Bros. distributing domestically and MGM handling international.

The official announcement was made in Hollywood by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson - who will co-produce The Hobbit - fellow producer Fran Walsh, and executives from New Line Cinema and MGM.

Jackson and Walsh said del Toro was “a genuine storyteller” of outstanding ability.

“A true original, Guillermo is a cinematic magician who has never lost his child-like sense of wonder. He understands that the fantastic must be grounded in the real and that all stories are only ever a reflection of ourselves,” say Jackson and Walsh.

“We have long admired Guillermo’s work and cannot think of a more inspired filmmaker to take the journey back to Middle-earth. We are delighted ‘The Hobbit’ is in such trustworthy hands.”
 
Bueno, me alegro de que se confirme oficialmente la elección de Guillermo del Toro.

Ahora sí: Guillermo del Toro dirigirá las películas de El Hobbit

El director de Hellboy y El Laberinto del Fauno, Guillermo del Toro, pasará cuatro años en Nueva Zelanda dirigiendo las dos películas de El Hobbit, según se confirmó hoy mismo. El anuncio oficial se ha hecho en Hollywood de mano del director de El Señor de los Anillos Peter Jackson - quien co-producirá El Hobbit -, la productora Fran Walsh y ejecutivos de New Line y MGM.

Jackson y Walsh han destacado que del Toro es un "narrador de historias genuino" de habilidades asombrosas.

"Guillermo es original, un mago de la cinemática que nunca ha perdido su sentido de la maravilla infantil. Entiende que lo fantástico debe estar anclado en la realidad y que todas las historias siempre son un reflejo de nosotros mismos", dijeron Jackson y Walsh.

"Hace tiempo que admiramos el trabajo de Guillermo y no podemos pensar en un cineasta más inspirado que él para llevarnos de vuelta a la Tierra Media. Estamos encantados de que El Hobbit recaiga en manos tan versátiles".

Del Toro se ha considerado a sí mismo "bendecido" por poder formar parte de la comunidad cineasta de Nueva Zelanda. El director mexicano se desplazará a Nueva Zelanda durante cuatro años para trabajar con los equipos de Wingnut Films y Weta.

Las dos películas se rodarán a la vez, pero según han anunciado, los estudios aún no han dado una fecha de comienzo del rodaje, y de momento no tienen aún un guión. Según Variety, es de esperar que lo realice el mismo equipo de guionistas que el guión de El Señor de los Anillos: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh y Philippa Boyens.

P.D. ¿Para cuando el inicio del rodaje? Yo creo que por lo menos un año. Hasta el verano mínimo de 2009 nada. Ahora con los diseños, guión, casting.........

(Lo de la segunda película es una apuesta arriesgada pero creo que muy estimulante para Del Toro. Espero que explore en profundidad algunos aspectos oscuros de la Tierra Media. Estoy seguro de que lo hará)

Yo no me imagino a otro Gandalf que Ian Mckellen (o como coño se escriba). Ahora empiezan las cábalas sobre el reparto, que es una de las tonterías que más gustan a hacer por los fans en este tipo de proyectos.
