Ringer spy Earl provided a story hot of the presses from the Los Angeles Times that says MGM’s management is no longer in control of the studio’s fate and that debtholders are now the decision makers. The MGM Saga is developing into a film-worthy drama all its own (one that will never get a greenlight) and the article states: “The internal divide and lingering uncertainty demonstrate how tortured MGM’s reorganization process has been and how the balance of power has shifted from management to lenders.”
For fans this means that non-entertainment types are now calling the shots and how that plays out is completely unpredictable. There is one tidbit about the two movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” to be directed by Guillermo del Toro and produced by Peter Jackson:
“Though Time Warner’s bid has not been officially rejected, people at the media giant’s Warner Bros. studio have been frustrated by the protracted process, in part because it and MGM co-own the rights to movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” which are currently in development.”
The article explains a lot more of the intricacies of what is going on. How does this fit with the report that filming will start in November? We have our feelers out and will update you as soon as we hear anything definite.

Hacerla, la hacen seguro. Es un blockbuster de oro y no van a perder ese tren. Otra cosa es que tarden más o menos, pero me da la impresión de que será antes de lo que pensamos.

Pues para mi que este proyecto tiene los días contados...No es de extrañar que lo cancelen. A Peter Jackson le han jodido varios veces con la preproducción bastante avanzada, p.ej: KING KONG.

Cierto, pero Peter Jackson, con todos los problemas que ha tenido, nunca ha dejado de sacar sus películas. Y "The hobbit" es un caramelazo para la taquilla. Lo que podría pasar es que cambiase el proyecto de manos.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO CONFIRMA QUE NO HAY LUZ VERDE Y TAMPOCO 3D
Sources all over the place are confirming our earlier report that indeed, there is no greenlight for “The Hobbit,” and that currently 3D isn’t being planned. The director held a conference call supporting the film “Splice,” and predictably those films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s book written for children came up during the phone chat. The Mexican director, currently living and working in New Zealand was definitive:

 “On both counts, there are no final answers. It is not greenlit. That is categorical. And 3D has been discussed literally once in the room. The budget and the schedule and everything that we are handling – the cost of the film, the number of days it would take to shoot – is being handled right now without looking towards 3D. Is there a chance it will become 3D in the future? Maybe. Right now, it’s not being planned as such.”

Ahora en serio, me parece muy extraño que algo tan caramelo para la taquilla como el hobbit acabase anclado en un cajón pillando polvo. Todo es muy extraño. :pensativo

Yo cerraria el hilo si. Lo unico que hacemos es retrasar fechas hasta la anulación. Yo lo cerraria, y cuando ya veamos La Tierra Media en todo su esplendor, si es que llega ese dia...:(, entonces será el momento de abrirlo de nuevo y sacar el mapa :)

Guillermo Del Toro departs “The Hobbit”


Guillermo Del Toro announced today that he is no longer directing the two movies based on J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, but will continue to co-write the screenplays. Out of respect to the legions of loyal Tolkien fans, both Guillermo and Peter Jackson wanted to break the news to The One Ring first. They are both committed to protecting The Hobbit and will do everything in their power to ensure the films are everything that the fans want them to be.

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life”, says Guillermo. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wlsh the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director”.

“We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave the Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone’s control – has compromised his commitment to other long term projects”, says Executive Producer Peter Jackson. “The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. Guillermo is one of the most remarkable creative spirits I’ve ever encountered and it has been a complete joy working with him. Guillermo’s strong vision is engrained into the scripts and designs of these two films, which are extremely fortunate to be blessed with his creative DNA”.

“Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished” says Jackson. “New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work”.

The Hobbit is planned as two motion pictures, co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM. They are scheduled for release in Dec 2012 and Dec 2013.

El mexicano Guillermo del Toro ha abandonado su puesto como director de 'El hobbit' debido a los constantes retrasos en el rodaje, provocados por los problemas financieros de la productora Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM).
Así lo anunció este domingo el propio cineasta a través de un comunicado publicado en el portal de internet 'The One Ring', especializado en la popular saga de 'The Lord of the Rings', en el que admitió que ésta es "la decisión más dura" de su vida.
"A la luz de los constantes retrasos en la fecha de inicio del rodaje de 'El Hobbit', debo afrontar la decisión más dura de mi vida", escribió el realizador, de 45 años, sobre este proyecto que, en principio, iba a ver la luz en dos películas, que se estrenarían en diciembre de 2012 y diciembre de 2013.
"Después de dos años de vivir, respirar y diseñar un mundo tan rico como la Tierra Media de Tolkien, debo, con gran pesar, abandonar la tarea de dirigir estas maravillosas películas", afirmó del Toro.
El cineasta especificó que continuará desarrollando los guiones de ambas cintas junto a Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh y Phillippa Boyens.
Días atrás el mexicano había mostrado su pesadumbre por la situación en la que se encuentra 'El hobbit', proyecto por el que se mudó con su familia a Nueva Zelanda hace más de un año.
Problemas financieros

Metro Goldwyn Mayer se encuentra en una situación crítica, con una deuda de 3.700 millones de dólares y sometida al control de una serie de fondos de capital riesgo que quieren mantener el estudio a flote reduciendo costes.
"Como coguionista y director de las películas, deseo a la producción la mejor de las suertes y seré el primero en la cola para ver el producto finalizado", concluyó del Toro.
Las dos películas de 'El hobbit' se centran en la novela homónima de Tolkien, que precede a 'El señor de los anillos' y cuyo protagonismo recae en Bilbo Baggins, papel que en la saga de Peter Jackson interpretó Ian Holm.
Las tres cintas de 'El señor de los anillos' generaron 3.000 millones de dólares en taquilla entre 2001 y 2003. La tercera parte, además, se hizo con los 11 premios Óscar a los que aspiraba.

Una de las razones del abandono de Guillermo, si leeis la noticia de onering.net es que no puede tirarse 6 años viviendo en N.Z. cuando en un principio lo tenían programado para 3... ¿Quién mejor que un director oriundo del pais como P.J?

La cosa estaba cantadísima desde el principio.
