Legendary poster and album cover artist Drew Struzan, who is responsible for some of the most memorable movie one-sheets of the 80s and 90s, is rumored to be coming out of retirement for Star Wars: Episode VII.
While Drew Struzan painted various pieces for the original trilogy between 1977 and 1983, his most popular and well remembered Star Wars posters are the triptych he did for the 1997 re-releases, which included one-sheets for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, each featuring characters important to that particular film and tying all three movies together. He then created similar posters for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith as they were being released in theaters.
According to Schmoes Know, Drew Struzan will return to create three more posters for the new trilogy that tie into the previous look and style of the ones he created for the first two trilogies.
J.J. Abrams himself contacted Drew Struzan, asking him to come out of retirement for this special occasion. Abrams hopes this will connect with the fan base, and bring some of the nostalgia from the original movies into this new series of films. While its rumored that Drew Struzan has agreed to do this for the filmmaker, neither Disney nor LucasFilm have confirmed his return to the franchise.
After creating the poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, Drew Struzan announced his retirement. Since that time, he has created a limited edition poster for The Walking Dead and he did a special Comic-Con poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2.
