Big Shiny Robot!: And now, and I don’t know if this is overstated as well, but I’ve read everywhere that you’ll be working on The Hobbit with [Guillermo Del Toro].
Mike Mignola: I did. I worked on it for about a week. It took longer to go to and come back from New Zealand… I was more time in the plane, I think, than I was on the ground in New Zealand, but there really wasn’t much for me to do. That world is so clearly established in Lord of the Rings, I just thought, “What is there for me to do?” And he had a few things he wanted me to take a crack at. It was really intimidating because John Howe, one of the main designers on Lord of the Rings flew out with me, so we were in New Zealand together. And Alan Lee was coming in the next couple of days and I’m like, “What the hell am I doing with these guys?” I suspect that what I did in the week I was there as soon as I left he handed that stuff over to John or Alan and said, “Here’s what the kid did. If you can use any of it, fine, if not, just throw it away.” I think he just wanted me to be there.
BSR!: Can you talk at all about what you did while you were there?
MM: Probably not. Not at this point.

MM: No, I did not. It’s so funny, because there’s so much speculation about what I did and it goes from someone saying, “I hope he did this,” to someone saying, “I hear he did this.” Those stories, especially anything involving Hollywood, you put that shit on the internet and it grows like a weed.

Siempre he dicho que sería un error muy gordo cambiar la estética que ya conocemos de la trilogía de Jackson, y que incluso las cosas nuevas deben guardar cierta coherencia visual con los diseños de las otras películas. Así que por lógica los responsables de los diseños han de ser los mismos que hicieron un trabajo excelente para Jackson

Rhys-Davies Not Returning for The Hobbit

John Rhys-Davies told Empire magazine that he has been asked to return for The Hobbit and it's sequel, but has declined. He played Gimli in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and could have perhaps played his father, Gloin, as Gimli doesn't appear in "The Hobbit."
"I've already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn't," Rhys-Davies said. "I have already completely ruled it out. There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."
He added that this time around, "They've got a different set of problems... because you've got 13 dwarves, a whole band of them... You're trying to represent a whole race... You're trying to do for dwarves what 'The Lord of the Rings' did for hobbits."

Vamos a ver:
Nadie habla de que se vaya a desvincular visualmente de la trilogía (habrá actores comunes, decorados comunes...), PERO no puede ser igual.
1º (y principal) porque el propio Tolkien dio dos tratamientos distintos a ambas obras. Como ya se ha comentado "el libro es diferente", por lo que el mayor error creo yo que sería "igualarlo".
2ª (y no menos importante) porque los hechos narrados en El Hobbit transcurren en otra época (diferente, menos oscura...). No establecer algún tipo de diferenciación visual con algo que ocurrió medio siglo antes y en unas condiciones "históricas" diferentes sería absurdo.
Así que ...Go Guillermo!

Acepto la 2ª y estoy de acuerdo. Es otra época menos oscura y como tal debe tener sus diferencias con los hechos ocurridos 50 años antes.
Respecto a la 1ª, lo entiendo, ya que el libro, aparte de que sea una época distinta está tratado de otra forma, y eso, en parte, es lo que no me cuadra dentro del legendarium de Tolkien. Entiendo que haya gente que le pueda gustar el Gandalf de El Hobbit, o el Elrond, o los elfos de ese libro, pero a mí no. No porque son distintos de su "legendarium", anteriores a que ese anillo que Bilbo encontró fuese el Único, anteriores a que Gandalf pasase de un "mago" a un Istari.
Leí ESDLA hace muchos años, casi 2 décadas, y posteriormente leí el Hobbit. Es cierto que me descuadró un poco porque el Gandalf de La Comunidad poco se parecía al del Hobbit, y lo mismo se puede decir de los elfos, éstos eran más humanos, poco tenían que ver con los Primeros Nacidos. Cuando leí el Silmarillion, y años más tarde los 9 volúmenes de La Historia de la Tierra Media y otros cuantos del "legendarium" de Tokien entendí que El Hobbit es diferente por cuando fue escrito y que esos personajes no eran los mismos.
Pero también entiendo que hayan personas que quieran apreciar esa ruptura. Yo creo que no la habrá. O eso espero.
