@Tim 13 a secas.

  • No price rises for the ‌iPhone 13‌ lineup.
  • The ‌iPhone 13‌ mini will offer approximately one additional hour of battery life.
  • The ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max will feature an 18 to 20 percent larger battery compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
  • Both the ‌iPhone 13‌ and ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro will continue to use the same battery components as last year, but offer batteries that are 10 percent larger.
  • The battery life of the ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro may be worse than the ‌iPhone 13‌ due to the power consumption of the 120Hz-capable ProMotion display.
  • The ProMotion displays of the ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max will throttle to 60Hz when Low Power Mode is enabled.
  • The ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max will continue to offer exclusive features that the ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro will not have.
  • The camera sensors across all models will be able to receive at least 15 percent more light, with the biggest increase on the Ultra Wide camera's sensor, with up to 40 percent more light.
  • "Cinematic" portrait video mode will use an electronic image stabilization (EIS) known as "Warp." This mode will attempt to keep the subject in the center of the frame, use optical image stabilization in a more "smooth" operating mode, and offer additional effects.
  • Night Mode will recognize when stars are in the frame and adjust settings accordingly. A new algorithm analyses structures, resharpens, and adjusts shadows. The color science of ‌Night Mode‌ will also be "visibly" improved.

Apple’s Big September Product Event: What to Expect

Will Tim Cook unveil an iPhone 13? That’s the million-dollar (or multi-billion-dollar) question circling next week’s big Apple product event.

Just as we were still shaking off the sleepy vestiges of a long Labor Day Weekend, the Cupertino technology giant sent out invites early Tuesday for a “Special Apple Event broadcasting from Apple Park.”

Almost two years into the pandemic and many months from our last in-person product event with any company, we’ve all grown used to these streaming product productions. Apple, in particular, appears more adept at it than most. It tends to keep them shorter than the in-person ones, knowing that most people are probably splitting their attention across multiple screens, and delivers production values we expect from televised events.

What remains, though, are huge questions about what this “#AppleEvent (as it’s known on Twitter) will be about. There’s the name of the event: “California streaming,” which might be an on-the-nose reference to the nature of the event: It’s streamed! and its origin: It’s in California!

But I doubt it.

Let’s go back a year to recall the new precedent Apple set when it launched exactly ZERO iPhones in September and instead unveiled a new iPad, a new Apple Watch, and a pair of new services (Apple One and Apple Fitness+).

The iPhone 12 lineup didn’t arrive until a month later.

Now, with the pandemic restrictions subsiding (or at least our lockdowns mostly over), you might expect Apple to reverse the script again and deliver the iPhone 13 next week. Unfortunately, we’ve not yet escaped the pandemic’s spiny tendrils, as its long-term economic and supply-chain impact reverberate throughout multiple industries. Chip supplies are plaguing the auto industry, the tech industry at large, and, yes, Apple. On a July 28 earnings call, Apple CFO Luca Maestri warned: “Expect supply constraints during the September quarter to be greater than what we experienced during the June quarter. The constraints will primarily impact iPhone and iPad.”

There’s been no material improvement in that situation over the summer and if Apple wants to have adequate supply of what should be high demand for the iPhone 13, it will wait a month to release the model and its variants.

Going back to the invite, I think there’s ample evidence that this September 14 event is about something (or things) other than the iPhone.

The word “streaming” is a big tip-off. Could this be the event where Apple unveils brand new Apple TV hardware (to go along with the radically improved Apple TV remote it unveiled earlier this year)? Following that train of thought and Apple’s penchant for introducing new and improving on existing services, doesn’t it make sense to think that some part of this is about the TV+ service? California streaming? That could be a reference to content streaming out of Hollywood where Apple is rapidly moving into “player” status (thanks mostly to Ted Lasso and canny indie movie picks like Coda).

These updates could come in the form of a true Apple TV (yes, one with a screen) and some more high-powered Hollywood-talent-driven content, possibly even some sort of TV+ live-TV programming. Apple already has a news arm (Apple News). Could it build a news network based on culling other people's journalism? Probably not, but I still think that if this announcement includes TV+, it will also be highly disruptive.

My other thought is based on the background, which reminds me of a macOS desktop. This event would be the perfect opportunity to introduce new macOS Monterey-running laptops and an updated Mac mini (which already has the original M1) based on new Apple silicon, something like the M1X or maybe M2 (a more unlikely name). Maybe we see a big-screen, 16-inch MacBook Pro running the M1X and some high-end apps like Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X.

There are other possibilities, like a new Apple Watch, though I keep seeing stories about Apple Watch 7 production delays. That might just be hearsay, or it could push that rumored update into the October event camp. This should be the event where we see a new pair of fitness-tracking AirPods Pros.

iPads, either Pro or mini, could be on the menu, as well. Apple might squeeze a lot of so-called second tier products into this September event to clear the path for an almost all iPhone event in October.

For now, this is all just fun guesswork. Apple CEO Tim Cook could pull an iPhone 13 out of his back pocket on September 14 but I’m not betting on it.
