“Thrones” Show Ending Won’t Impact Novels
Author George R.R. Martin says he won’t change what he plans to write to finish out his “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, despite the wrapping of the HBO television series “Game of Thrones” based on the novels.
Speaking to The Guardian this week, Martin said that the TV show version had not been good for him and it won’t influence his remaining two novels: “No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t change anything at all … You can’t please everybody, so you’ve got to please yourself.”
The 70-year-old Martin says he deliberately removed himself from online complaints and theories about the series’ final season: “I took myself out of all that … some of [the theories] are right and some of [the theories] are wrong. They’ll find out when I finish.” He also confirmed the show and buzz around it actually slowed down his writing:
“The very thing that should have speeded me up actually slowed me down. Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day … I’d feel terrible because I’d be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I’ve only written four pages when I should have written 40.’
But having the show finish is freeing, because I’m at my own pace now. I have good days and I have bad days and the stress is far less, although it’s still there… I’m sure that when I finish A Dream of Spring you’ll have to tether me to the Earth.”
Martin also says the magic of fan interaction has vanished for him: “I don’t want to go to a party where an unending succession of people want to take selfies with me, because that’s not fun the way it was in the old days. That’s work.”
There are still no potential publication dates for his final two novels.
