New Features
HDR is one of the biggest new features. It removes the limitations presented by older video signals and provides information about brightness and color across a much wider range. HDR-capable displays can read that information and show an image built from a wider gamut of color and brightness. Besides the wider range, HDR video simply contains more data to describe more steps in between the extremes. This means that very bright objects and very dark objects on the same screen can be shown very bright and very dark if the display supports it, with all of the necessary steps in between described in the signal and not synthesized by the image processor.
To put it more simply, HDR content on HDR-compatible HDTVs can get brighter and darker at the same time, and show more shades of gray in between.
For those that would rather search than browse, 3.2 update brings more apps into the Universal Search Results. Over 60 apps will be supported including youTube, Hulu, HBO Go, Vudu, Showtime, Sling, Starz and more.
High end video enthusiasts have been asking for audio upgrades – and NVidia has answered with Dolby Atmos pass-through. Popular apps like SPMC (aka Kodi), Plex, MX Player, Vudu and more.
Power users like me will love this; Shield Android TV will have built in Samba support! That’s right – no more FTP servers set up to transfer files to and from your Shield Android TV. Your Shield will show up on your network – readily accessible to and from your network.
